Carrie Johnson: Celebrating 20 years of growth with CompHealth

Carrie Johnson

What does two decades of commitment look like? If you’re Carrie Johnson, vice president in our CompHealth locum tenens division, it looks like a lot of determination, resilience, hard work, and kindness.

“My journey at CHG has been transformative for me personally and professionally,” Carrie shares. “I was a struggling university student when I joined the company, and with the assistance of CHG’s tuition reimbursement program, I was able to complete my degree and create a stable home for myself and my family.”

Carrie’s CHG story began 20 years ago in an administrative role, helping physicians with hospital privileging, creating and reviewing contracts, and acquiring all the documents needed to credential physicians. Prior to becoming a leader, Carrie worked in a variety of roles, which gave her insight into almost every aspect of our business, helping set a solid foundation for her current role as a leader.

“I’ve been able to learn so many aspects of our business through the different positions and opportunities I’ve been given,” Carrie says. “I’ve been a front-line and/or senior leader for over 27 different specialties in CompHealth locums during the past 20 years. For the lifelong learner in me, the opportunity to always be learning new things and developing new talents is exciting. CHG has allowed me to grow.”

A lot of memories are made over 20 years, and although it was hard to pick just one, Carrie shared one of her most memorable:

“I served on the AAFP board, the largest and most influential physician association in the U.S.,” she says. “Not only was I the only nonphysician on the board, but I was the first executive leader from a staffing company to be selected. It was an amazing experience, and being able to represent our company, elevate our brand, and advocate for physicians in a way that supports CHG’s purpose and the meaningful work physicians do in every specialty, in every city, every day, was inspiring.”

Carrie’s advice for others wanting to grow their career? “Be resilient, work hard, and be kind,” she says. “At various times in my life I’ve had to overcome huge challenges, both personal and professional. I’ve learned that the key to success is to possess the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties and have the ability to demonstrate the emotional toughness to bounce back by working hard and being positive.”

What was it like when you first started working here?

Jeff Freeman had hair. However Jeff, like CHG, just got better with age.

What is an interesting fact about you?

I love doing philanthropic work — both at home and abroad — and believe that giving back is one of the best ways you can improve the world. Some of my favorite places I’ve served include Israel, Egypt, England, Haiti, and Salt Lake City.

If you had a day to do anything at all, what would you do

I’d put my gardening gloves and straw hat on, roll up my sleeves, and spend all day in the warm sun working in my vegetable garden. Fresh fruit and vegetables, linseed oil stained trellises, and rich dark soil is my happy place. I’d take a break only to drink a cold lemonade or some cranberry juice (with pellet ice of course) and rest in my hammock under my pergola.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you take with you

My family, my bag of various vegetable seeds, and my favorite book.

What is your go-to karaoke song?

I had never sung karaoke until our last leadership summit, and it was painfully embarrassing because I didn’t know the words to the song. But I am all about learning, so I guarantee the next time an opportunity comes along to sing Gangsta Paradise in front of all my CompHealth family I’ll be ready!
